Barcelona will host the Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and will be the World Capital of UIA-UNESCO Architecture in 2026.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, the Superior Council of the Spanish Architects’ Associations (CSCAE) and the COAC have promoted the candidacy of the city which was accepted in January 2020. Finally, the city of Barcelona has been named the winner ahead of the other competitor, the Chinese city of Beijing.
Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona has not stopped betting on making a place on the world map by promoting culture as an engine of socialization and growth. This time, architecture is taking the lead on the great debates that will must be faced in the 21st century.
